Adelaide police officer allegedly dragged metres by car during getaway

A driver has been charged after allegedly dragging a police officer for several metres during a failed getaway in Adelaide's west.

The 38-year-old West Lakes man was himself later hit by a car as he tried to run from officers, police said.

They first spotted a black Range Rover SUV allegedly speeding on Sir Donald Bradman Drive, Lockleys, just before 4pm yesterday.

Police said they didn't chase the vehicle, which was allegedly stolen from a Lonsdale business on Boxing Day, instead using the police helicopter to track it through backstreets and redirecting police cars to Merlin Road at Fulham Gardens.

Several officers attempted to arrest the driver, but he allegedly reversed the car, pulling a female officer underneath the tyres and dragging her a distance before he took off.

Police said PolAir followed the SUV until the alleged driver dumped it on Frederick Road, Seaton, took off on foot and was hit by a passing car on Grange Road.

He was arrested at the scene and taken to Royal Adelaide Hospital where he was treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The injured police officer suffered serious injuries, but 9News can confirm no bones were broken and she was released from hospital today.

The man remained in hospital under police guard overnight.

He has been charged with with endangering life, dangerous driving to escape police, illegal use of a car, refusing a blood test, refusing to provide personal details and driving unlicensed.

He was scheduled to appear at Port Adelaide Magistrates Court today.
