A toddler is recovering in hospital after she was bitten on the head by her family dog in Adelaide's north-west.

Alurah Walker, 2, was attacked by the family's South African Boerboel on Monday at a home in Osborne.

The two-year-old was rushed to hospital where she has since had surgery on the injuries to her face and arm, her father told 9News.

A two-year-old girl has been rushed to hospital after she was bitten on the head by her family dog in Adelaide's north-west.

The family dog, Joop, has been surrendered to council. Nine

Alurah's father said she is recovering well but her family said she may need to remain in hospital until next week as she continues to heal from the attack.

The dog, called Joop, has been surrendered to the Port Adelaide Enfield Council.

As for the dog's future, it remains with the council which is continuing its investigation.

The vicious incident has sparked calls for the breed to be banned in South Australia.
