Adelaide car may be oldest electric model

An Adelaide man thinks he may have Australia's oldest running electric car, a 1974 Enfield 8000 imported from the Isle of Wight.

Randal Love says the car was one of five imported to Australia for evaluation and trials.

He bought his for $3000 in 1993, has since travelled about 160,000 kilometres and continues to drive it to work every day.

"Despite years of use, the car is still fairly well preserved and certainly in much better condition now than when I bought it," Mr Love said.

"Originally the top speed was 60km/h, but after some upgrades it's now about 80km/h."

A full battery recharge costs Mr Love about $2.40 which gives him a range of about 50 kilometres.

Enfield Automotive produced about 120 of the cars in the UK between 1973 and 1977.

Production was later shifted to Greece where another 100 cars were built.
