Travellers stranded at Adelaide Airport as taxi drivers strike over Uber agreement

Taxi drivers at Adelaide Airport have left travellers stranded as they walk of the job, striking in response to a new Uber agreement.

Adelaide Airport announced a new agreement with Uber yesterday to allow ride-sharing services to collect people from the terminal, ending a monopoly that had been held by taxis.

Frustrated taxi drivers said the UberX drivers may not have proper accreditation. The group also blocked any UberX vehicles from getting into their new designated rank.

"We want a fair fight," one protesting taxi driver said last night.

"We can compete with Uber, that's the point we're trying to make. The Taxi Council does not listen either, nor does the government." 

Signs outside the terminal had been directing people to a new Uber pick-up area next to the multi-level car park. But today UberX has temporarily stopped its new pick up service at the airport.

The protest by drivers has created chaos and confusion for arriving passengers. Many have been forced to make alternative transport arrangements.

Airport employees are also directing people to bus services. 

"We have organised for extra buses," an employee was heard telling passengers in video captured by Sky News.

Many passengers voiced their anger on social media and said they were stranded for hours with no way to leave the airport.
