The peak union body is pushing for increased compulsory super contributions for minimum wage workers.

In a submission to the Fair Work Commission, the Australian Council of Trade is seeking compensation for low income workers for lost retirement savings because of the Abbott government's decision to freeze super increases.

Compulsory super was due to increase from 9.5 per cent to 10 per cent on July 1.

The union argues a 20-year-old will be $18,401 worse off in retirement because of the decision.
