Parliament House cleaners to boycott toilets and bathrooms

In the case of expected grotty bathrooms across Parliament House in Canberra this week, it says that cleaners want a $1.80 an hour pay raise.

Thirty four cleaners are taking industrial action over cuts to pay and conditions and will put a ban on cleaning toilets and bathrooms from 6.30am on Monday until Saturday.

The action coincides with politicians returning to Canberra for a sitting week.

Union United Voice says the cleaners earn $21.10 an hour and haven't had a pay raise for three years.

Labor's workplace relations spokesman Brendan O'Connor says MPs will survive and he supports the cleaners' stance.

"These are hard-working people who sometimes have three jobs and they shouldn't be treated in that manner," Mr O'Connor told ABC TV.
