No future for greyhound racing in ACT

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr says his government cannot continue to support the greyhound racing industry following NSW's decision to ban the sport.

NSW Premier Mike Baird announced on Thursday his government would ban greyhound racing from July 1 next year following a damning inquiry into the industry.

As Victoria ruled out banning the sport and Western Australia distanced itself from the NSW industry, Mr Barr was quick to back the NSW decision, saying there was no future for greyhound racing in the ACT.

"The government cannot continue to support an industry that is turning a blind eye to the sort of behaviour and cruelty uncovered by the Special Commission of Inquiry," Mr Barr said in a Facebook post.

"It is untenable for the ACT government to continue allowing, and financially supporting the practice of greyhound racing."
