A 20-year-old man has been charged with recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm following an alleged 'coward punch' during the aftermath of New Year's Eve celebrations in Canberra.

The man, from Braddon in Canberra's inner north, handed himself in to police this afternoon following the release of CCTV footage.

The victim is now at home recovering, after emergency surgery, following the attack outside the East Row Supa 24 convenience store in Civic during the early hours of New Year's Day.

"Police would like to thank the community and media for their assistance in swiftly providing information regarding the identity of the two men involved in the disturbance with the victim, pictured in CCTV," an Australian Federal Police spokeswoman said.

Earlier today, police released security footage of the alleged punch.

Police allege the man was speaking to another man when a third person stepped in from one side and hit him in the side of the head.

The man was released on bail and is due to face the ACT Magistrates Court on January 15.
