A 28-year-old man is to face court on drug trafficking charges after Canberra police stumbled across him and two others inside a construction site during a late night patrol.

Police were patrolling in Dickson just before 1am Saturday when they noticed the lights on inside an unfinished building and heard power tools.

They found the men wearing high-visibility work clothing and tool belts.

As one of the men was asked for identification, two bags containing white power residue fell from his pocket.

Police then conducted a search, finding cash and approximately 21.5 grams of suspected methylamphetamine.

A 28-year-old man from Evatt was charged with trafficking a controlled drug other than cannabis and unlawful possession of stolen property.

He will face the ACT Magistrates Court on Saturday.
