Just what Canberra needs - more politicians.

The ACT Legislative Assembly is set to expand from 17 members to 25.

Both major parties are on board and legislation for the change will go before the assembly on Thursday.

The number of electorates in the territory will also increase, from three to five.

Despite being the home of federal parliament, the ACT has fewer politicians of its own than any other jurisdiction.

Any boost to the assembly's size needs a two-thirds majority vote, meaning the eight Labor government MLAs and eight Liberals have to agree.

An inquiry headed by the territory's electoral commissioner recommended the assembly expand to 25 members at the next election in 2016, then to 35 members in 2020.
