Accused puncher was on bail and curfew

A 20-year-old man accused of knocking out Sydney man Michael McEwen with one punch has been refused bail after it was revealed he should not have been out that night.

The man was on bail on another charge and on a court-imposed curfew when he allegedly knocked Mr McEwen, 23, unconscious on a Bondi street, leaving him with severe head injuries.

The man, who is charged with recklessly causing grievous bodily harm, did not appear at Waverley Local Court on Monday.

His lawyer Ben Archbold said his client wasn't applying for bail, which was formerly refused.

"He's doing okay, he obviously doesn't want to be in (jail)," Mr Archbold told reporters outside court.

"There's always two sides to every story."

Court documents showed that one of the reasons the prosecution opposed bail was because the accused had "committed the serious offence while on bail/parole for other serious offences".

It's been revealed the man was not meant to leave his home between 8pm and 7am as he awaited sentencing for various charges and he was not meant to drink alcohol.

He was sentenced on the other charges two days after the assault.

Mr McEwen was left unconscious after being punched and stomped on in front of dozens of revellers in the early hours of December 14 last year at the corner of Campbell Parade and Roscoe streets in Bondi.

He was in an induced coma for a week and required two sessions of surgery.

The accused man will face Central Local Court on March 4.
