Accused murderer, 19, fronts court after teen stabbed to death in Melbourne CBD

A young man accused of stabbing another man to death in a Melbourne CBD street has faced court for the first time.

Alfie Heggs, 19, was beamed into Melbourne Magistrates Court from police cells on this morning after being charged with Jojo Punvaree's murder.

It's alleged Heggs and Punvaree, 19, had an altercation at a venue in the Melbourne CBD about 2.40am yesterday.

Punvaree was then found with multiple stab wounds on King Street and died at the scene.

Heggs was arrested a short time later about two kilometres away in Aurora Lane.

Police believe the two men were known to each other.

Heggs was charged with murder yesterday evening and faced court this morning for a brief filing hearing.

His lawyer told the court it was the 19-year-old's first time in custody and he had no prior convictions.

He also required medication for an underactive thyroid and had previously been diagnosed with ADHD, although he had stopped taking his medication about a year ago.

Heggs, who remained quiet throughout the hearing, was remanded in custody to face a committal mention hearing in May.

Due to recent legislative changes to committal hearings, Heggs' case is expected to be fast-tracked to the Supreme Court.
