Abuse royal commission enters final stage

THE ROYAL COMMISSION INTO CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTIONS:

* Allegations involving more than 4000 institutions

* First sitting April 2013

* First public hearing September 2013

* 57th and final public hearing held this week

* Public hearings in relation to 116 institutions

* More than 1.2 million documents compulsorily produced to inquiry

* 6530 private sessions with survivors

* Nearly 2000 survivors to have private sessions by December

* Sat for 400 days in public

* Heard from more than 1200 witnesses in public hearings

* Delivered findings for 33 case studies; another eight pending

* 44 research reports

* Major reports on working with children checks, redress, civil litigation

* Criminal justice report to be delivered August

* 1950 referrals to police and other authorities

* 37,740 calls and 21,788 letters and emails received

* Final report due December 15, 2017.
