Abseiler bitten by snake spends night deep in the Blue Mountains

A 22-year-old man has been rescued after being bitten by a snake in the Blue Mountains yesterday afternoon.

Daniel Heritage, and experienced abseiler from Adelaide, was accompanying a group of Scouts when he was bitten by a copperhead snake deep in Whungee Wheengee Canyon, north of Mount Wilson.

“We were canyoning and I was standing on a ledge,” Mr Heritage told 9NEWS.

“When I climbed down there was a snake there.”

Emergency services were called to the area just after 2.30pm, but rain and heavy fog delayed an air rescue.

Mr Heritage spent the night in the canyon accompanied two paramedics and friends.

"The night was fantastic, yeah it was a lot of fun, we camped out in a cave, had a fire, slept on inflatable boats we had,” Mr Heritage said.

“We had emergency first aid kits, all that stuff and people who knew what they were doing.”

He was winched to safety this morning in a stable condition.

Despite the ordeal, Mr Heritage said he planned to continue canyoning for the remainder of the week.
