Abbott visits India ahead of signing major deal on uranium sales

There was colour, formality and India's history on brilliant display for Tony Abbott's ceremonial welcome at India’s Presidential Palace.

This was the Prime Minister's first state visit to India, and he stood side-by-side with President Pranab Mukherjee in a show of friendship and closer economic, political and security ties in the fight against terrorism.

There was a visit to India Gate, the country's war memorial, where Mr Abbott honoured India's contribution and those who died at Gallipoli.

He paid homage too at the grave of Mahatma Gandhi, more sure footed than Julia Gillard two years ago when she slipped and fell over face first.

On that visit in 2012, Ms Gillard began talks to sell uranium to India and tonight Mr Abbott will formally sign the deal.

Despite criticism at home and fears it will lead to India arming itself with nuclear weapons, the Prime Minister insists the agreement meets the strongest international safeguards.

He said it will be used only for energy and India is committed to world-best practice.

The Prime Minister wants Australia to be an energy super power, with this deal a significant step towards that goal.
