PM Tony Abbott expected to drop GP co-payment today

Tony Abbott will spell out how he plans to kickstart the government's stocks as he meets with coalition MPs today.

The prime minister held a cabinet meeting last night which was set to discuss the future of the Medicare co-payment and a joint training mission to Iraq involving New Zealand troops.

The GP co-payment is expected to be dropped following a public outcry and intensive campaign by Labor.

Opening the cabinet meeting, Mr Abbott said voters wanted the government to focus on them, not the internal workings of the Liberal Party.

He will deliver the same message to the party room when it meets at 9.30am (AEDT).

"We are working hard for the people of Australia," he told his ministers.

A families package and small business policy are due to be announced before the May budget.

Treasurer Joe Hockey will release the Intergenerational Report on Thursday which will outline the budget challenges over the next four decades as well as the progress made by the government.
