Abbott slams govt inaction on power prices

Tony Abbott has taken a swipe at the Turnbull government's inaction on power prices, insisting it must build a new coal-fired power station.
The former prime minister said Australia was "green conscience-stricken" when it came to opening a new coal-fired power station, despite happily exporting coal to other countries.
The Liberal backbencher used his regular spot on 2GB to criticise the government for not doing more to take the pressure off power prices, despite the issue creating anxiety for many Australians.
"How can it be that we have the largest readily available energy reserves in the world, of coal, of gas, and of uranium, and we've got now the world's highest power prices?" he said on Wednesday afternoon.
"It's just wrong.
"There is no country on earth, none, which is trying to go as far as we are with intermittent and unreliable power."
Mr Abbott said the Turnbull government needed to immediately put an end to subsidies for renewable energy and instead build a new efficient coal-fired power station.
"Because the market won't do it, the government must."
