PM Abbott says ISIL ‘coming after us’ following overseas terrorist attacks

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has responded to the terrorist attacks which took place internationally overnight.

In a press conference today Mr Abbott said Australia had to maintain vigilance after dozens were left dead in attacks extremist group ISIL has claimed responsibility for.

“This illustrates yet again that as far as the Daesh death cult is concerned, it’s coming after us,” he said, using another name for ISIL.

“We may not always feel that we are at war with them, but they certainly think they are at war with us.”

Mr Abbott promised to “disrupt, degrade and ultimately destroy” the influence of ISIL on home soil with de-radicalisation programs.

“Regrettably, as we saw in France, all you need for terrorism these days is a knife, a flag, a camera phone and a victim,” he said.

“This is the grim reality the world faces now.”

The government is working on legislation to strip citizenship from Australians with dual nationalities who commit terrorist acts at home or overseas.

Mr Abbott said while Australia would never make anybody stateless, something had to be done for those fleeing Australia for Syria.

“Australians going abroad to fight with ISIL, that’s the modern form of treason and perhaps we need something like the modern form of banishment,” he said.

The Abbott government has allocated $40 million to de-radicalisation programs in Australia in an attempt to prevent citizens joining terrorist organisations.

Mr Abbott used the press conference to send a strong message to anyone thinking of joining ISIL.

“Daesh has nothing to do with God, nothing to do with religion, it has nothing to do with building a better world,” he said.
