Prime Minister Tony Abbott, an avowed monarchist, says he is looking forward to entertaining royal guests next month.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge - and baby Prince George with his nanny - will head to Australia in April for a 10-day visit.

The royal family will visit Sydney, Brisbane, Uluru, Adelaide and Canberra. Melbourne, most notably, misses out.

The Queen has given special permission for two heirs to the throne to travel to Australia on the same plane so Prince William and Kate can bring baby George on their tour Down Under.

Mr Abbott said Australians felt a great warmth towards the royals.

"Members of the royal family have enjoyed being in Australia and that pleasure is amply reciprocated by the Australian people," he said in a statement on Monday.

"I look forward to welcoming The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince George to our country in April."
