Abbott in terror talks with Canada PM

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has telephoned his Canadian counterpart Stephen Harper to express Australia's solidarity over tackling terrorism.

He made the call after a Canadian man linked to Islamic militants rammed two soldiers in Quebec killing one of them.

Police killed the attacker shortly after the incident near Montreal.

"I can inform the House today I did speak with Prime Minister Stephen Harper to express our solidarity with Canada as we stand against the worldwide terrorist threat," Mr Abbott said.

The government had agreed to adopt all 37 recommendations of a committee to amend so-called "foreign fighters" legislation, Mr Abbott said.

He expects the bill - which makes it a criminal offence to travel to terrorism hotspots designated by the government - will pass within this sitting fortnight.

The committee which examined the bill called for shorter sunset periods for new powers and greater oversight of preventative detention orders, control orders and stop search and seizure powers.
