The latest headphone tech helping the hearing impaired

Headphones, earphones, earbuds – whatever you call them, you've likely got a pair.

From the luxurious to the budget friendly, there's no shortage of ear candy on the market.

Now, tech giant Apple is set to transform the way we listen while shaking up the medical world.

The Apple Airpods Pro 2 features hearing aid functionality, aimed to assist those with mild to moderate hearing loss.

Using your iPhone and AirPods Pro, you can now conduct a hearing check that calibrates the Airpods to work as hearing aids.

Professor Robert Briggs the Clinical Professor of Otology at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital say too often people don't heed the warnings when it comes to wearing headphones.

"If the sound is presented at too loud a level, for example 90 decibels, then you start to get hearing loss," he said.

Professor Briggs says this new headphone tech could be the way of the future.

"Hearing aids are very expensive, and AirPods are relatively inexpensive compared with a current model hearing aid, so it might provide good amplification for many people who have a mild to moderate hearing loss," he told A Current Affair.

Professor Briggs has some sound advice to those looking to try out the new tech.

"I think most important is that if people diagnose themselves with a hearing loss on this type of testing, that they should get appropriate investigation and follow up to be sure that there's nothing that is of concern or might be medically treatable," he said.

These new hearing headphones won't be for everyone, but there's still plenty of other measures you can take to look after your ears — especially when it comes to young kids.

Belkin Australia's Michael Stephens says there's specially designed headphones to keep sound at safe hearing levels for children.

"We have our exciting new SoundForm Inspire wireless headphones for kids, and one of the key features of these is they are 85 DB volume limited," he said.

"What that means is safe sound for your kids so they can't go above a certain threshold of audio."

Tech expert Elly Bailey, known online as Elly Awesome, says there's a few things to consider before making your next headphones purchase.

"One of the number one considerations when buying a pair of headphones that people sometimes forget about is the comfort," she said.

"Obviously, you want to have sound quality that you're happy with, and that's probably number one, but you need to be able to wear them for the time period that's going to suit your lifestyle, whether that's on your commute or just wearing them at work all day."

Though, if you're looking for high quality, you may need to dig deep. Many of the latest high-tech headphones carry price tags over $500.

"If you're looking for the best of the best, I'd probably recommend Apple AirPods Max, the Sony WH-1000XM5, or something like the Sonos Ace headphones," she said.

Elly says while some headphones may break the bank, there are plenty of affordable options.

"If you want a really budget friendly pair of headphones, I'd recommend the Sony WH-CH520… They cost $79 and they're just a great starter pair of headphones," she said.
