‘Drop-kick kids’: Teen train surfers breaking into unmonitored Sydney carriages

Teenage train surfers are risking their lives hanging out of open doors across the Sydney rail network and using master keys to access locked carriages on unmonitored trains.
Social media footage shows groups prying open doors and using keys to enter locked end carriages on Tangara trains, a fleet model where only one carriage currently features a working security camera.
Sydney Trains Chief Executive told A Current Affair that NSW Police are investigating recent security breaches across the network. Supplied
Shadow Transport Minister Natalie Ward slammed the government’s response to the growing security issues.
“Apparently, the cameras don’t work, the kids have a key,” she said.
“These drop-kick kids are running the train network.”
Sydney Trains chief executive Matt Longland confirmed NSW Police was investigating the security breach.
“These are secure parts of the train. They can’t operate the train, the key that was used was just to operate that door,” Longland said.
One teenage surfer told A Current Affair he risked severe injury and fatal falls “for the thrill and the people you meet”.
