Neighbourhood divided over 'chaotic' school pick-up ordeal

Ask most parents and they'll tell you school drop-off and pick-up can be a stressful and chaotic experience.

Waiting in hundreds of cars to enter the school grounds to pick up a child, they wonder: will they be there? Will I have to wait for them and hold up other parents behind me?

This is the daily dilemma and if your school happens to be on a busy main road then your problems are two-fold.

"Yes, it is chaotic, but what can I do?" said a young mum outside Hurstville's St Mary Star of the Sea Catholic school on Croydon Road.

Parents line up half an hour before and after school on a roadway clearly marked either "no standing" or "no stopping".

"I have no choice," another mother said.

"What else can I do? My child is too young to walk out the gate."

"Council doesn't want to know about it even though parents are disobeying the signs," said Zach Dent, who lives in an adjoining cul-de-sac, where he said cars "constantly double park across my drive".

Another local said she prefers to stay inside at drop-off and pick-up times, as the sound of car horns from frustrated motorists who are blocked by waiting parents is constant.

Despite the signs erected by council, Dent said, "no one from Bayside Council ever enforces the rules".

"And so parents continue to block the roads and residents from getting in and out of their homes," he said.
