What a difference a day has made for cafe owners Chris and Val Kreketos, who are now smiling once more.

The siblings were preparing to say goodbye to their Bakers Oven cafe of 41 years, located in Sydney's historic The Rocks precinct.

New South Wales state government bureaucrats said they'd been there too long and their heritage building needed urgent restoration work.

But the state's new Minister for Transport, Jo Haylen, has intervened and put their exit on hold for at least a month while she investigates the circumstances behind their eviction.

"My message is please come down and have a fresh coffee and a lovely fresh cake and see what you'll be missing if all this goes away," Val said.

The siblings were inundated with messages of support following A Current Affair's expose.
