Survivors gather for memorial for victims of second Bali bombings

As the sun set over an idyllic NSW beach, residents gathered to commemorate those killed in a shocking terrorist attack on the idyllic Indonesian island of Bali.

It happened on October 1, 2005, and became known as the second Bali bombings.

The first Bali Bombings happened on October 12, 2002, and 88 Australians were killed.

Newcastle resident Joe Frost miraculously survived the second Bali bombings in 2005.

"The two people to my immediate right both passed away," Joe Frost said.

Frost was "more or less completely physically unharmed" but three of his friends died.

"I still don't know how to explain that," Frost said.

Suicide bombers targeted a restaurant in Kuta and beach cafes at Jimbaran Bay.

Four Australians died in the bombings and 17 were injured.

Doctor David Craig was a senior investigator with the Australian Federal Police.

"I ran the investigation right from the outset to the conclusion," Craig said.

Joe Frost and David Craig wrote countless letters to politicians pleading for an appropriate memorial service to be held.

"To be honest, it makes me feel angry because 20 years ago, I was fighting for these people with a lot of other good people, trying to get them home and looking after them," Craig said.

Tonight they are being remembered.
