Supermarket giants race to give shoppers affordable convenience with Christmas specials

Major supermarket chains are racing to get Christmas range specials ready before it's even Halloween and have stocked shelves with everything shoppers need to get ready for the upcoming festive season.

Coles, Woolworths, Aldi and IGA are all competing to get shoppers in stores, and are pulling out all the stops to create affordable convenience leading up to Christmas.

Coles

Celebrity chef Luke Mangan has been working with Coles to create the most convenient Christmas range, which are easy, save time and can feed a whole family.

"We've got some beautiful mac and cheese balls, arancini balls... look at these haloumi chips, easy and reheatable as a little starter," Mr Mangan told A Current Affair.

And Mr Mangan said he's got the whole meal covered with glazed ham and a loin of lamb which he has boned out, wrapped in prosciutto and stuffed with orange and onions among other tasty treats.

"Look at this salmon, amazing Tasmanian salmon and it's filled with fetta and spinach and it's baked and it's just going to fall apart."

Mr Mangan said Coles haven't forgotten dessert either with the celebrity chef showing off a white chocolate passionfruit mouse and a giant Ferrero Rocher with a surprise in the middle.

And it wouldn't be Christmas without a pavlova.

The pavlovas feed up to a family of 10 and come with your favourite flavours. They're also easy to garnish.

According to Mr Mangan, all you need to do is "open the packet, whip a bit of cream, add your garnish".

This Christmas, Coles is also giving away kitchen knives.

From November 4, customers will earn credits towards the knives by scanning their Flybuys card when they spend $20 or more.

Woolworths

Woolworths has also stocked the shelves with everything you need to entertain this festive season.

Paul Harker from Woolworths said they have a beautiful cheese platter to entertain everyone.

"Whether it's the Danish Blue from Denmark or the Italian Parmesan… It's at a really affordable price point - $3.80 is the cheapest there and as you get up to that 14 aged grana x - $12," he said.

The Thomas Dux range of specialty cheeses hits stores next week.

The dessert costs $25 for 20 - just $1.25 each.

Woolworths have a range of chicken and falafel kebabs for $7, a kebab kit for $6 and Mexican corn for $6.50.

There are 18 new barbecue products now available at Woolworths including wagyu beef burgers, with the patties costing $8.

And Woolworths plans to release a bigger selection of new products closer to Christmas.

As does rival Aldi.

IGA

IGA's cooked chook is also a winner rated number one by Canstar along with an award-winning ham for $9.50.

Joseph Romeo's who is the owner of Romeo's Food Hall – IGA, said you can get some great deals at his store on pavlovas which you won't pay more than $10 for and closer to Christmas you can expect even more deals.

"But as we get closer to Christmas, you'll see our weekly IGA specials will be a lot cheaper than that," Mr Romeo said.

"We have weekly specials, hundreds of specials every week with IGA… when they are on special is the time to buy up."
