Small business owner fears future as land tax soars to over $200,000

For more than two decades Angie Romas has run his humble sandblasting and painting business from Melbourne's south-east.

He employs a dozen workers and supplies materials to some of Victoria's major projects, but says an increase in Victorian land tax means he'll need to shut up shop.

Ten years ago, Romas' land tax bill was $8700 for the four-acre block in Dandenong South.

This year, the small business owner has been slugged $203,600.

"Every February, it'll go up by $50,000," Romas told A Current Affair.

"We're being punished for just being here."

Premier Jacinta Allan today insisted revenue raised from land taxes is invested straight back into the "growing needs" of the community.

But Romas believes the 2240 per cent tax hike will force him to pick between downsizing his business, or closing down completely.
