How the Queen communicated through her fashion choices during reign

She was one of the most photographed women in the world and Queen Elizabeth II seemed to never put a step wrong when it came to her wardrobe choices.

For 70 years the monarch carefully curated every outfit she wore.

Her thoughtful clothing choices started as early as her wedding day in 1947, in a dress made from satin purchased with ration vouchers post war.

"The wedding dress was reasonably modest because remember this was post war and the Queen bought the fabric with her ration cards," former editor of the Australian Women's Weekly, Deb Thomas, told A Current Affair.

"So it had to have the drama of a royal wedding, but be kind of modest enough to tip the hat to all of the things that people were going out in, that post war environment."

Her Majesty used the same designer, Norman Hartnell, again for her coronation gown in 1953.

The Queen always chose to champion British designers, with Hartnell going on to global success.

Throughout her 70-year reign the Queen's choices always hit the right note.

Diplomatic colours and carefully selected jewellery communicated with those around her.

Her own family remarked at her wonderful outfits in a documentary marking her 90th birthday.

"Lots of my friends say, 'oh she's just the best style person there is you know, she looks great in her clothes'. Her style is something that is very unique to her - elegant, classic - she's got a wonderful happy colour to her," granddaughter, Princess Eugenie said.

"Don't forget, when she turns up somewhere, the crowds are two, three, four, 10, 15 deep, everyone wants to be able to say that they saw a bit of the Queen's hat as she went past," daughter-in-law Sophie of Wessex remarked.

"She needs to stand out for people to say, 'I saw the Queen'."

Bold colours and styles were a favourite of Her Majesty's and were always topped with a matching hat and a brooch from her unrivalled collection.

"The other kind of curious thing about the colours that she chose or that she chose with her dresser Angela Kelly was that she collected budgerigars and if you look at the colours, nearly every colour would match a budgie so there's that side of things as well," Thomas said.

The Queen was always seen with her handbag too, which was mainly carried on her left arm.

She would use the bag as a tool to communicate with staff, by changing arms, to tell them she needed assistance.

The biggest compliment to the Queen's fashion choices came when her granddaughter Beatrice chose to refashion one of her dresses for her own wedding in 2020.

And in her final public appearance, there still wasn't a fashion foot out of place.

Her black handbag hung dutifully off her arm and she wore a tartan skirt, which was her unofficial uniform in Balmoral.
