After a month perusing the aisles of a Coles supermarket in Sydney's south-west, a social media famous cockatoo has been rescued from the shop aisles.

Affectionately known by locals as Mickey, the bird has been a regular non-paying customer at the shop in Macarthur Square Shopping Centre in Campbelltown for the past month.

Both Coles and the shopping centre owner have tried to remove Mickey from his perch, but rescue groups said there was nothing that could be done.

"The issue is the ceiling is too high to catch him with a net, and if he's hit with a tranquilliser he'll die when he hits the ground," a WIRE spokesperson said.

Unfortunately for centre management, the cockatoo has become a social media hit, with locals posting videos of Mickey helping himself to a buffet of Coles products including bread.

A Current Affair understands Sydney Wildlife caught the bird late today and will decide tomorrow where he will be released.
