'We're so thrilled': Melbourne Cup winning trainer shares special link to star jockey

"Welcome to the Club" - those were the words from Michelle Payne as she congratulated Jamie Melham on her Melbourne Cup win.

Melham becomes only the second female jockey in history to win the great race.

It was a fairytale finish for her and Half Yours - and Jamie said when she passed her husband in the race she knew she'd win it.

Half Yours' trainer Calvin McEvoy spoke to A Current Affair trackside about Jamie's history-making ride.

"We grew up in South Australia. My fiancee Demi and [Jamie] went to school together, so we've got a long association," McEvoy said.

"She rode for us for a very long time in Adelaide, we knew how good she was and, you know, it's been amazing. We're so thrilled."

Clutching the handles of the golden cup trophy tightly, McEvoy said he was looking forward to celebrating with the team.

"I can't wait to fill [the cup] with champagne!" McEvoy said.

"We'll be partying somewhere and we'll be at work in the morning, but we won't be feeling great!"
