Leigh's priceless blood used to save critically ill newborns

Leigh Stewart is an old hand at rolling up his sleeve.

It's a fortnightly commitment - two hours every time.

But it's a commitment he takes very seriously after finding out his blood runs golden.

Leigh has the rare but universally used O negative blood type but he is also one of just 21 known people in Australia who has a rare platelet type.

The combination is used to treat critically ill newborns. 

"Doctors and that go to university for 10 years to study and learn to save lives and we mere humans can do it by rolling up our sleeve," he said.
