Truck stop turned into a makeshift dump

There are six rubbish tips all within two minutes of this truck stop. Yet someone has still decided to turn it into a wasteland.

Angry locals are calling for the City of Kingston council to act, calling the pile of rubbish "a debacle".

Department of Transport and Planning statement

"We urge everyone to dispose of rubbish responsibly and be mindful of the impacts that roadside dumping has on the environment."

"Rubbish dumping and littering on public land is illegal and can be penalised with major fines for businesses and individuals or five years imprisonment, or both."

City of Kingston statement

"We recognise the community's frustration regarding illegal dumping along Westall Road and share concerns about the impact it has on local amenity and the environment.

"While Kingston Council works hard to address illegal dumping across our municipality, this particular location falls within land managed by the Victorian Government through the Department of Transport and Planning.

"The area in question forms part of the arterial road reserve and is used for truck parking associated with the road network, rather than providing access to adjoining properties.

"Council will continue working with the Department of Transport and Planning to ensure the matter is addressed appropriately and the site is maintained to an acceptable standard."
