Ray Martin interviewed Barry Humphries more than a dozen times — but the legendary Australian was almost always in character.

"I think she was probably the greatest living Australian," the former A Current Affair host says about Humphries' most famous character, Dame Edna.

Martin reflected on what it was like to interview Humphries over the years after the comedian passed away at the weekend at the age of 89.

Almost always Humphries was in character as either Dame Edna or Sir Les Patterson.

Martin said Humphries was the only person, who wasn't his mother, to call him "Raymond".

"It was like being admonished," Martin told A Current Affair host Ally Langdon.

He said that was all part of the comedian's style, which kept people on their toes.

To find out what else he said, watch the full interview above.
