Matthew Nean loves his rugby league but he has been banned for 20 years.

He can't play, can't coach and can't even watch his kids compete.

He was rubbed out for contacting a referee during a match but Nean and his supporters claim video of the incident proves the punishment is over the top.

Statement from NSWRL spokesperson:

Rugby League has a zero‑tolerance policy regarding abuse of match officials, as does every sport.

Matthew Nean and his advisors have engaged extensively with NSWRL over a number of years regarding this matter, and they are well aware of the pathway that could be followed should Mr Nean wish to return to the playing field.

In view of Mr Nean's threatened legal proceedings, beyond making these general comments, NSWRL has no intention of entering into any further public debate regarding this matter.
