Eager Aussies already brainstorming how to get back on sports fields

Australian families who had hoped the government would give the green light to restart community sports were today disappointed.

Community sports resumption will unfold in stages with more details to hopefully be announced on May 8, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced this afternoon.

AFL coach for Narre North Foxes Rob Arthurson is so keen to get back on the field though he is already brainstorming how to do it safely.

"I think the sensible thing would be for parents to drop kids off and then just watch the game from inside their cars," Mr Arthurson told A Current Affair. 

"It would be fantastic if in the next two, three, four weeks the boys could get out in the park and get a run in. I think it would be great for their mental health," he added.

While Aussies will have to wait a little longer for restrictions on sport to relax, a number of states are rolling back other measures.

From today, up to two adults and children can meet in New South Wales. Most beaches will also be opening across the state.

From midnight tonight, Queenlanders will be able to see family and friends, as well as travel 50 kms from their house for recreational activities with one guest.

In both South Australia and Western Australia, residents are able to meet with up to 10 people. And in WA, recreational activities including camping and picnics are allowed.

The Northern Territory has even announced restaurant, cafes and bars can reopen from May 15.

Victoria and Tasmania are expected to keep their restrictions in place until May 11.
