Aussie centenarian passes away at age of 107

Victorian centenarian Edna Harling has passed away at the age of 107 while surrounded by her loving family, following a short illness.

The Shepparton woman lived a remarkable and long life and on Anzac Day she spoke to A Current Affair about the sacrifices her family made to defend Australia.

Harling lived through multiple pandemics and world wars and attributed optimism to her longevity.

"I always look forward," Harling told me at the time.

"I never look back at any day.

"It's finished and a good one might be coming up."

Before passing away, the 107-year-old revealed she still managed to get around without the aid of a walker through her later years.

Harling was born in Kerang, Victoria in 1914 and grew up in a very different Australia to the society that we enjoy today.

She said she was 10 years old when her father purchased the family's first car.

But Harling revealed her life had not been without its trials.

As a child, she lost her sister to Spanish flu.

"The nurse said to me that, 'Your little sister's a star in heaven now'," Harling had said.

Both Harling's husband and brother served in World War II.

Her husband, Chris Harling, worked on the radar system that was set up in Darwin after the bombings of 1941.

Her brother, Henry "Harry" House, fought in Papua New Guinea.

Harling was also a local legend in the sport of bowls.

She was a member of the Victorian state team for 22 years and won numerous national and state titles.
