"Care Protect" will begin trials in key locations across Australia from next month.

Statement is from Federal Health Minister Richard Colbeck:

The treatment suffered by residents in the facilities that has given rise to calls for video surveillance is completely unacceptable and it is one of the reasons the Government called the Royal Commission.

Instinctively, I am not supportive of the intrusion that video surveillance brings and it should not be necessary in a system that is functioning properly. 

The Government continues to institute a number of reforms as the Royal Commission progresses to improve the operation of aged care services. 

From 1 July 2019, new consumer-focused Aged Care Quality Standards will commence along with new regulations supporting those Standards.

The Government will also obviously be guided by recommendations of the Royal Commission on matters such as this when it reports. 

A viable and well-functioning aged care system is the objective of the reforms and conduct of the Royal Commission that the Government is undertaking.
