Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove and Lady Cosgrove will welcome more than a 100 recipients of Australian honours to Government House in Canberra on Friday to celebrate an important anniversary.

It is almost 40 years to the day that Gough Whitlam abolished the British honours system and created the Order of Australia.

Since then more than 1.3 million awards have been issued and approved, with the system now comprising 55 different awards.

They include the controversial knights and dames reintroduced by Prime Minister Tony Abbott a year ago.
