The federal government and the states will spend $30 million on a national awareness campaign to address rising domestic violence.

The decision came hours after Opposition Leader Bill Shorten called on Prime Minister Tony Abbott to back a national summit on the issue.

"It's important that everyone in Australia knows that violence against women is a crime and must be stopped," Abbott government minister Michaelia Cash told the National Press Club in Canberra on Wednesday.
