One-punch killers will face 10 years jail in Victoria

Victoria will soon join NSW in taking a tough stance against one-punch killers, with a tough new law set to enforce minimum 10-year sentences for attackers.

The law, as reported in the Herald Sun, will be unveiled in Parliament this week.

The NSW government introduced laws earlier this year that stipulate a mandatory eight-year sentence for fatak one-punch attacks when the attacker has been drinking or taking drugs.

Victorian Premier Denis Napthine said the new legislation would send a clear anti-violence message.

The new laws will also enforce a 10-year minimum sentence for anybody convicted of manslaughter in a gang attack.

Hugh Garth, 21, will be the first person in NSW to face the possibility of an eight-year minimum sentence.

He was charged with assault causing death while intoxicated after he allegedly struck Raynor Manalad, 21, at a party in Sydney.
