An eleven-year-old girl has died after falling from a rapids ride at a water park in central England, in an accident similar to the Dreamworld theme park tragedy on the Gold Coast.

The girl was on a school trip when she fell from Splash Canyon water ride at Drayton Manor, Staffordshire, BBC News reported.

She was airlifted to hospital about 11:20pm AEDT yesterday, but died soon after.

The Health and Safety Executive has reportedly been informed of the incident.

"Our thoughts are very much with her family and friends following this tragic incident,” Superintendent Carl Ratcliffe from Staffordshire Police told the BBC.

The park will remain closed tomorrow in “a mark of respect” to the girl’s family, Drayton Manor said in a tweet.

The accident bears resemblance to the tragic Dreamworld theme park tragedy on the Gold Coast in October last year.

Four people died on the Thunder River Rapids ride after it malfunctioned.

The park re-opened its doors on December 10, however Thunder River Rapids has since been decommissioned.
