Yankee concussed after running into outfield wall mid-catch

New York Yankees prospect Jose Pirela suffered a concussion yesterday after crashing hard into the outfield wall in a Major League Baseball spring training game against the New York Mets.

Pirela was sent to hospital for a CT scan and cervical MRI, the Yankees said.

The 25-year-old, who usually plays the infield, was in center field and chasing a drive hit by the Mets' Juan Lagares, who made it around the bases for an inside-the-park home run.

Pirela's head and right shoulder slammed into the padded fence and he collapsed to the warning track.

The Venzuelan stayed on the ground as teammates and Yankees manager Joe Girardi along with Yankees medical staff attended to him.

He got to his feet before he was taken off on a cart.

Pirela has impressed with his bat in spring training, batting .370 with three doubles, two triples and five runs batted in from 27 at-bats.

Girardi said Pirela was dizzy after hitting the fence, but "communicating."

"Obviously, you're concerned when a player doesn't get up," Girardi said. "He did not feel good."
