WWII bomb scare leads police to big zucchini

Police called to reports of an unexploded World War II bomb have instead uncovered a large zucchini.

An 81-year-old German man raised the alarm yesterday after finding a 40cm-long object, The Guardian reports.

Responding police discovered that the object was in fact a vegetable.

They have since admitted that the zucchini, which was dark and weighed about 5kg, “really did look like a bomb”.

Police believe the vegetable was flung over the hedge and into the 81-year-old’s garden by a passer-by.

World War II-era bombs are often uncovered in Germany, with about 21,000 residents of the western German city of Koblenz evacuated in September when an old explosive was unearthed during construction work and had to be defused.

Another discovered in Germany’s financial capital of Frankfurt also led to the evacuation of more than 60,000.
