Alleged car thieves attempt to steal unmarked police car with detective inside

Two alleged car thieves in Texas picked the wrong car to steal.

Detective Tony Miller was sitting inside his unmarked cop car at 5.15am on Tuesday morning, warming up the engine when two men in a Ford Mustang pulled up alongside him.

The two failed to see the detective sitting in the car due to the tinted and frosted windows.

“I hadn’t been in the car but a minute, and I saw this car drive by, turn around and park right alongside me on the street,” Det. Miller told the Star-Telegram.

“I thought this wasn’t going to turn out good, so I pulled out my gun and waited.”

“The passenger got out, came up to the door and wiped frost off my window,” he said. “He may not have been able to see inside, so he opened my front door.

“When he looked inside, I said, ‘Police! Show me your hands.’ ”

The suspect then fled the scene on foot and remains at large.

Meanwhile the second suspect took off in their car.

With the help of back-up, Detective Miller chased after driver, who eventually crashed into a building in Fort Worth.

He was arrested and taken to hospital with minor injuries.

He’s been charged with attempted theft and evading police.

Authorities are continuing to search for the man who fled on foot.
