World's best new architecture revealed
More than 220 projects were shortlisted for the coveted World Building of the Year prize this week by organisers of the annual World Architecture Festival.
The finalists will all present their projects at the festival's 17th edition this November.
A panel of 175 delegates will vote for category winners, which then go head-to-head for the overall title.
Chinese buildings figure heavily among those, including the Women and Children's Centre in the city of Shenzhen by architects MVRDV.
Australian Embassy, Washington DC
The design for the Embassy of Australia in Washington DC by Bates Smart was inspired by Australia's iconic landscape and embodies the essence of the vast continent.
Campo Tures, Italy
The OLM Nature Escape Eco-Aparthotel by Andreas Gruber Architects in northern Italy.
Ezhou , China
Chinese firm UAO Design's Liangzi Island off-island Pier tent features a glass-fronted visitor centre overlooking a lake in the city of Ezhou.
Preston, Melbourne
The Preston Level Crossing Removal Project in north-east Melbourne, by Wood Marsh Architecture, also made the shortlist.
Karapinar, Turkey
The control centre of the Kalyon Karapınar solar power plant in Turkey by Bilgin Architects.
Cochamo, Chile
Inspired by the native Tagua bird, Tawa Refugio by architectural firm Contexto in Chile's Puelo Valley is a celebration of nature and architecture.
