Woman strangled to death by escalator

A Canadian woman has died after her scarf got caught in an escalator and strangled her.

The 48-year-old woman was found dead at the bottom of the moving staircase at Fabre Station in Montreal's north on Thursday, BBC reported.

It is believed her hair was also pulled into the escalator as she bent down to free the scarf.

Alone and unable to free herself, the woman suffocated.

Montreal police said they hoped the coroner's report would help to shed light on the circumstances of the fatality.

"What we know now is that the woman's scarf was caught in the escalator," police spokesman Jean-Pierre Brabant said.

"When she bent over to try to get the scarf out, her hair was also caught."
