Woman in Sweden arrested over imprisonment of three adult daughters

A Swedish mother accused of keeping her three daughters locked in an apartment for up to ten years has been arrested.

The 59-year-old is being held in the small town of Bromolla in Sweden's south.

One of the woman's children escaped overnight and alerted a neighbour that she was being held captive with her sisters, according to reports.

Witnesses said up to eight police officers raided the home and led the mother away.

Another witness added that one of the women removed from the apartment "could barely walk by herself".

All three women and their mother are now being questioned by police in the nearby town of Kristianstad.

The three daughters, who are believed to be aged 32, 24 and 23, are said to have slept on inflatable mattresses in the apartment with no television.

A man who claims to be the children's father said he has been searching for the girls for 17 years.

The women's mother allegedly moved them to different locations to keep their whereabouts a secret from their father.
