Ex-KKK leader arrested over hate crimes

A former Ku Klux Klan leader has yelled "Heil Hitler" as he was arrested over the hate crime murders of three people outside two Jewish sites in Kansas.

Frazier Glenn Cross Jr., 73, was arrested over the unprovoked shooting deaths of a 14-year-old boy and his grandfather in the parking lot of Jewish Community Centre.

Cross then allegedly continued his rampage by gunning down a woman at the Village Shalom, a Jewish retirement community.

Cross, who goes by several different aliases, is a known white supremacist and anti-Sematic.

He was sued in the 1980s by the Southern Poverty Law Centre for intimidating African Americans and continued to have several run-ins with the law in the years that followed.

Cross twice ran as the Republican candidate for a state Senate seat in both 1984 and 1987.

Both times he was unsuccessful.

Overland Park Police Chief John Douglass said the shootings are being investigated as "hate crimes".

"We know it was a vicious act of violence, and we know obviously it was at two Jewish facilities," he said.
