An internet vlogger in China has had a scary brush with death after livestreaming herself eating what she thought were aloe vera leaves.

The 26-year-old woman, known by her surname Zhang, can be seen on video of the livestream animatedly munching on the enormous waxy-looking leaves.

"This is great," the Shanghaiist quoted her as saying as she eats the first bite.

But almost immediately after taking the second bite, Zhang appears to realise something is amiss.

"Oh, that tastes bitter. Really bitter," she says to the camera, before reportedly abandoning the livestream.

Zhang later said her mouth went numb and her throat felt like it was on fire.

The plant she was actually eating turned out to be Agave Americana (American aloe), a poisonous plant grown in Mexico.

Soon after eating the poisonous plant, the vlogger broke out in rashes and blisters and was rushed to hospital.

Doctors pumped Zhang’s stomach to remove the plants and she is reported to be in a stable condition.
