Ever wondered what would happen if you filled an entire street with firecrackers and lit them all at the same time?

A Chinese village in the Denghai District of Shantou has shown us the answer - and it’s impressive.

Video of the extravagant Chinese New Year celebration earlier this month shows eager spectators lining up along the narrow street which is carpeted with tens of thousands of fireworks.

Officials light the fuse and the scene quickly becomes a deafening chaos of smoke and explosions.

Chinese authorities have been cracking down on the use of new year firecrackers in recent years, in a bid to combat the country’s escalating air pollution problem.

But the message doesn’t seem to have reached this village, where blowing up the main street has long been an annual tradition to ensure safety and good fortune for local residents in the new year.
